"Chicago-Read Mental Health Center (CRMHC):
CRMHC is a state psychiatric hospital located in the northwest corner of Chicago. Its' roots lie in a commitment to services to the poor and mentally ill made 140 years ago. The first public use of the land was the Cook County Poor Farm in 1851. The state took over the facility in 1912, naming it Chicago State Hospital. In 1965, the Charles F. Read Community Mental Health Center was built adjacent to the hospital as a center for community-based mental health services. Currently CRMHC provides adult inpatient psychiatric services for residents of the northern half of Chicago, all of Evanston, and some northern Cook County suburbs. An average daily census of 185 is divided among nine locked units. The hospital had 2,000 admissions in 1999 that accounted for more than 20 percent of all state psychiatric admissions in Illinois. CRMHC is part of the Metro-North Comprehensive Community Service Network of the Illinois Department of Human Services Office of Mental Health."
